Description

The Voimala building (Power Plant), completed in 1901 at Pasila’s VR-National railways, is protected by the Finnish Board of Heritage and is an important part of Helsinki’s architectural and industrial history. It is one of the earliest buildings in the area and was originally built to serve production needs by providing heat, steam, compressed air, and electricity. The architectural design, interior design, and workplace development were carried out by Gullstén-Inkinen Design & Architecture. The main architect was Jari Inkinen, while Hanna Gullstén and her team were responsible for the interior design.

The building’s purpose has changed many times over the past 120 years. In 2023, Heino Group purchased the Voimala and began its renovation to serve as the company headquarters.

The design process began with thorough surveys and documentation, since not only the façades but also certain interior spaces, such as the Power Hall, were protected. Although some original surfaces could not be preserved for safety and functional reasons, the hall’s checkered floor was carefully reconstructed.

The final layout was designed to support Heino Group’s operations, while also anticipating future needs. The Power Hall was transformed into an event and exhibition space with a new floor level, which preserved part of the original machine base. New meeting and working areas were created in the adjacent Boiler Room.

Architecture and interior design were closely aligned throughout the project. The interior emphasized quality and long-lasting solutions, with new structures clearly distinguished from the old. This created a new layer of history in the building, one that respects the past while adding a modern dimension.
